About This Site

The Home Safes & Valuables Guide publishes hands-on reviews, side-by-side comparisons and step-by-step guides on protecting the things you keep at home: fireproof home safes, fireproof document bags, biometric quick-access safes, in-wall safes and portable travel safes. Every piece is written from real use in a real house, with an eye on what a safe actually protects against and what it does not.

Safety and Security Notes

No home safe is burglar-proof. Most consumer safes are designed to delay and deter a quick smash-and-grab, not to stop a determined thief with tools and time. Bolt any safe that can be bolted to the floor or a wall stud, and keep it out of the master bedroom closet when you can, since that is one of the first places thieves look.

Fire and water ratings describe specific laboratory test conditions, such as a set temperature for a set time. A real house fire can run hotter or longer, and a safe that survives the fire can still be soaked by fire hoses. Store paper inside sealed plastic bags inside the safe, and remember that many fire ratings are for paper only: digital media, film and USB drives can be damaged at much lower temperatures.

Write down your combination or override code and keep backup keys somewhere other than inside the safe. Replace keypad batteries on a schedule, and test biometric safes with each enrolled finger every few months. Before drilling into a wall for an in-wall safe, check for wiring, plumbing and gas lines, and follow local codes or hire a professional. If you store firearms, follow every state and local storage law, and keep any safe holding a firearm locked and out of reach of children at all times.

A safe is not a substitute for insurance. Photograph or video your valuables, keep copies of important documents in a second location, and talk to your insurer about coverage limits for cash, jewelry and collectibles. Nothing on this site is legal, financial or insurance advice.
